This auspicious day is called by many names. It is immersed in many myths, tales and folklore, woven intricately into our faith and culture, celebrated in innumerable ways.

For Jains it’s the day that commemorates the first Tirthankara, Rishabhanatha, ending his one-year asceticism by consuming sugarcane juice poured into his cupped hands. The Hindus believe it marks the start of Treta Yuga. Some also believe that Kubera attained the post of treasure on this day and that buying and worshiping gold pleases him.

Some call it Dhan Trayodasi, the day Goddess Lakshmi emerged with a pot of gold and silver from the churning milky sea. Traditionally it is believed that on this day by purchasing jewelry made of precious metals or cooking utensils made of metal, one is inviting the goddess of wealth into the hearth and home. Prayers and poojas for the goddess are performed with pomp and grandeur imploring her to grace them with her presence, to bless them with riches and wealth.

Others call it Dhanavantari Trayodasi, the day Lord Vishnu descended on earth in the avatar of Dhanavantari carrying a pot of elixir and blessed humanity with the knowledge and skill of medicine. Devotion to the lord signifies the need of humanity to be protected against disease and sorrow, the need to live a long and healthy life. But most call it Dhanteras, the day that marks the beginning of the five day festival of Diwali , a time for friends and family, a time for togetherness.

Togetherness, to nurture old relations and to foster new bonds.

Togetherness, to reminiscence on old memories and to make new ones.

Togetherness, to nourish the body with delicious food.

Togetherness, to nourish the soul with prayer and devotion.

This Dhanteras may the benevolence of goddess Lakshmi and the blessings of lord Dhanavantari bestow upon you and your family the boon of health, prosperity and amity.
